We checked out early and headed over to Europcar for our car rental. If you cannot drive manual, then I suggest reserving an automatic as soon as you can because there aren’t nearly as many cars available. They’re also four times more expensive than a manual car. Continue reading “Yorkshire Dales”

From Keswick Onward to Leeds

From Keswick Onward to Leeds

We had about a half day left in Keswick before we had to take the train to Leeds. I wanted to visit the Yorkshire Dales and the easiest way to do that was to go to Leeds, rent a car for the day and drive up to the Dales. We had our final breakfast at the bed and breakfast, visited Derwentwater one last time, and then took the bus back to Penrith Rail Station to take the train to Leeds.  Continue reading “From Keswick Onward to Leeds”

Hiking in Aira Force and Strolling Around Ullswater

We woke up early for breakfast – there’s a buffet bar that you can grab yoghurt and fruits but you also can order freshly-prepared hot dishes from a menu. I highly recommend their full English and mushrooms on sourdough bread.  Continue reading “Hiking in Aira Force and Strolling Around Ullswater”

The Mystical Beauty of the Lake District

The Mystical Beauty of the Lake District

TRAIN:
Cheltenham Spa to Penrith (North Lakes)
(1 transfer at Birmingham New Street)
Travel Time: 4h 23min
Total: £321.30 (for 3 people)
Total per person: £107.10

We took the early morning train to Penrith since it was a 4.5-hour transit. I’ve had the Lake District on my list ever since I learned there was a Peter Rabbit museum since this was where Beatrix Potter lived and wrote her infamous “Peter Rabbit”. It is a mountainous area in northern England, inside the county of Cumbria and is considered the wettest area in the entire country. Famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or “fells”) and its associations with the early 19th century writings of William Wordsworth, it’s a fairly popular holiday destination.  Continue reading “The Mystical Beauty of the Lake District”

The Cotswolds: Second Edition

The Cotswolds: Second Edition

TRAIN:
Cheltenham Spa to Stratford-Upon-Avon
(2 transfers at Birmingham New Street and Birmingham Moor Street)
Travel Time: 2 h
Total: £13

Our second day in the Cotswolds was spent in William Shakespeare’s birthplace: Stratford-Upon-Avon. I’ve read Shakespearean plays since I was ten years old due to my fifth grade teacher. We would study one play throughout the year and put on our own performance at the end of the year for our parents and celebrity guests (my year was “Comedy of Errors”). I ended up joining his Saturday program where we continued to study Shakespearean plays and visit Ashland, Oregon every summer to watch live performances of the plays we studied. We put on performances as a group for veteran Shakespearean actors like Sir Peter Hall and Sir Patrick Stewart and our favorite, Sir Ian McKellan. I mean we were called the Hobart Shakespeareans!  Continue reading “The Cotswolds: Second Edition”
